Arranging product fields with Field order
Field order controls how dishes, beverages and wines are printed in a menu: which information appears, in which order, on which line, and with which text styling.
The setting belongs to the style, so every menu that uses the style follows the same layout.
Where is Field order?
- Open the menu and go to Step 2. Style.
- In the General tab of the right-hand panel, expand Dishes, beverages, wines.
- Expand Field order.
Which fields can be arranged?
The Field order list can contain the following fields:
- Article number
- Name
- Name (translation)
- Winery
- Vintage
- Origin
- Alcohol
- Declarations
- Price
- Description
- Description (translation)
- Nutrition values
A field is only printed when the product has information for it. Some fields also depend on the product type:
- Winery and Vintage: wines only.
- Alcohol: wines and beverages only.
- Article number, Origin, Description and Declarations: only when filled in for the product.
Name is always printed; it can be moved and styled, but not hidden.
The Nutrition rating is not part of Field order; it is displayed separately.
How can fields be rearranged?
Each row in the list has a drag handle on the left and up to three icon buttons on the right. Hovering over an icon shows a tooltip with the action it performs.
- Drag a field by its handle up or down the list to change its position.
- Click the eye icon to hide or show the field (Hide field / Show field). Hidden fields are skipped in the menu.
- Click the star icon to switch between primary and secondary text styling (Set secondary text styling / Set primary text styling). A filled star means primary; an empty star means secondary.
- Click the line break icon to print the field on its own line or on the same line as the previous field (Show on separate line / Show inline). Fields on a separate line are highlighted in blue.
What happens before and after the name?
The position of Name in the list divides the fields into two groups:
- Fields placed before Name are printed before the product name, for example the article number or the vintage.
- Fields placed after Name are printed after it, in list order.
Same line or separate line?
A field set to Show on separate line starts a new line. Otherwise, it follows the previous content on the same line, preceded by the separator symbol for dish fields.
Which separator symbols are available?
The Separator symbol for dish fields, located directly below the field list, sets the symbol placed between fields printed on the same line. Default: comma (,).
The style also has a Separator symbol for translated name, used with the translated name. Default: middle dot (·).
Both settings offer the same symbols: space, vertical bar (|), middle dot (·), colon (:), comma (,), semicolon (;), tilde (~), dash (-), long dash, slash (/) and backslash (\).
After a comma, colon or semicolon, one space is added. All other symbols have a space on both sides.
Primary or secondary text styling?
Each style has two sets of text settings: Text (primary) and Secondary text. Both are defined in the style's text settings, and each covers font, size, colour, weight, italics, hyphenation, indent, letter spacing and capitalization.
The star icon only chooses which of the two sets a field uses; fields are not styled one by one. Changing Secondary text therefore changes every field set to secondary, as well as other elements that use it, such as section descriptions.
In some custom menu templates, primary and secondary text may look the same.
How are translations positioned?
Name (translation) and Description (translation) are arranged like any other field. They appear only when the menu has secondary languages, and not for products where translation is turned off.
The Translations panel, just below Field order, links directly to these settings: "You can change the position of translated fields in the field order settings."
How is the inline price positioned?
The Price field only takes effect when Show prices inline with product is turned on. The link below that toggle leads directly to Field order: "You can change the position of the inline price in the field order settings."
If the name of a product is hidden and Price is placed before Description, the price is moved after the description for that product.
What about styles created before Field order?
For styles that existed before Field order was available, the previous display and line break settings (article number, winery, vintage, origin, declarations, description and nutrition values) were carried over into the Field order list.
